I have found a pet

If you have found an animal there are quite a few things that you can do which may help you reunite the pet with it's owners. We would always advise you take the animal to a vet to scan for a microchip.

If you have found a stray dog and are unable to contact the keeper, you do have a legal requirement to contact the local authorities and inform them.

If you've found a dog :

  • Check if the animal has a collar tag with a contact number for the keeper on. If it does, try contacting the keeper.
  • If the collar tag has a contact number for the animal's registered database, try calling them as they may be able to help you get in touch with the keeper.
  • If the dog doesn't have a collar tag, contact your local dog warden and arrange for them to collect the dog.

If you've found a cat :

  • Check if the animal has a collar tag with a number you can call the keeper on.
  • Ask around your neighbours to see if anyone has lost their cat.
  • Call a local rescue such as the RSPCA or Cats Protection to request if someone can come out to collect it.
  • If the cat is injured, take it to the nearest vet immediately so it can receive the treatment it requires.

If you come across a lost pet, here's what you can do to help:

1. Approach with Caution:

Always approach the animal with care and caution. A scared or injured pet might behave unpredictably, so try to remain calm and gentle.

2. Check for Identification:

Look for any identification tags on the pet's collar. If you find any, contact the owner immediately. Many pets have tags with the owner's contact information.

3. Take the Pet to a Vet or Shelter:

If the animal is injured or requires medical attention, take them to a nearby veterinarian. Vets can check for microchips, which are a common way of identifying pets. If there's no immediate need for medical care, consider taking the pet to a local animal shelter. They often have the resources to reunite lost pets with their owners.

4. Inform Local Authorities:

Report the found pet to your local animal control or animal services. They might already have information about missing pets and can assist in reuniting them with their owners.

5. Spread the Word:

Use social media and online platforms to post about the found pet. Include a clear description and any distinguishing features. Many pet owners actively search for their missing pets online.

6. Check for Lost Pet Flyers:

Keep an eye out for any lost pet flyers in your neighborhood. Owners often post them in the vicinity where their pet went missing.

Your actions can make a significant difference in bringing happiness and relief to both the pet and its human family. If you're unable to find the owner, consider reaching out to local animal rescue organizations that can help find the pet a loving forever home.
